GENESEE VALLEY PLEIN AIR PAINTERS INCORPORATED
(GVPAP)
An Association for Artists Who Paint Outdoors

Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters, Inc., an artist not-for-profit association, promotes and inspires quality plein air painting while providing socially pleasant painting opportunities for its membership throughout the year.
INTRODUCING GVPAP
Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters, Inc. (GVPAP), a plein air artist association, promotes and inspires quality plein air painting. Through regularly scheduled outdoor painting sessions, GVPAP provides diverse plein air painting opportunities throughout the Greater Rochester and Finger Lakes Region. Incorporated in 2006, Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters Inc. members are practicing, experienced plein air artists. Qualified artist applicants are encouraged to join GVPAP. All "painting" mediums are welcome.
We are committed artists who paint in the out of doors, on site in natural light all year long. We hold to the definition of plein air painting that 85% of plein air painting must be completed on site "in plein air" (in natural daylight). Painting sessions, known as “paintouts” are scheduled regularly year round. Depending on the season, paintouts may be scheduled weekdays, weekends and evenings. Our members participate regularly in paintouts and volunteer to work on GVPAP activities. Members also participate in competitive, juried GVPAP art shows.
Please peruse this home page and view photographs of recent paintouts. In addition, check out our other web pages which show pictures of past events, our first annual art show as well as our GVPAP Membership and Members Gallery. In the “Downloads” web page you may view past GVPAP E-letters, our plein air newsletter which includes plein air painting tips as well as member news.
If you are committed, experienced plein air painter and you desire to be an active team member …GVPAP may be the organization for you. Please read our Membership Information page. It details GVPAP membership requirements and benefits of joining GVPAP. If you have any further questions, please contact me at info@gvpap.com. Thank you.

UPCOMING EVENTS
See the Calendar of Events page for scheduled paintouts and other events.
HOW TO BECOME A PLEIN AIR PAINTER GVPAP is not an educational organization per se -- we do not teach artists to paint plein air nor do we give classes. Applicants for membership must have plein air experience as well as be a skilled artist before they join GVPAP. So, how does one gain experience plein air painting? Many of our members are professional art teachers. They give instruction in plein air painting techniques in the various mediums. For a fee, they provide lessons, classes and workshops. This Art Teacher and Demonstrator Referral List is available on the "Downloads" page.
RECENT PAST EVENTS:

Mendon Ponds Paintout (April 12, 2008)
Nina Rupp, Cecelia Chang, Ethan Welch, Christopher O'Handley and Kathleen Hanney painted at the beach area of 100-acre pond. It was windy, chilly, mostly cloudy...but nice to be out painting.

Genesee Country Village Paintout (February 9, 2008)
Members gathered to get ready for the upcoming show.

High Falls Paintout (January 21, 2008)

Genesee Country Village Paintout (January 26, 2008)
Eleven members worked on paintings for the upcoming show at the Wehle Gallery at Genesee Country Village.

Winter Solstice Paintout (December 20, 2007)
Four members painted at Salmon Creek Country Club in our annual Winter Solstice paintout. It was a rare day in Rochester - nice snow cover, clear blue skies, no wind, and moderate temperatures (upper 20s). Christopher O'Handley, Terry Brooks, Bill Sheridan and Cecelia Chang enjoyed the day.

Fast Ferry Paintout (November 21, 2006)
The Ferry Farewell Paintout....maybe it's goodbye...or maybe she'll spend the winter in Rochester.
Attendees: Bob Keim, Jeanette Musliner, Christopher O'Handley, Gail Kellogg, Phyllis Bryce Ely, and Barbara Jablonski.

Hamlin Beach Paintout (November 15)
What a Monet day. Man 'o man, Lake Ontario is gorgeous in November. The water was like glass and the sky was eerie...that is ...before that awful sun came out and ruined the beautiful white backlight that was coming through the trees and reflecting on the water.
Hiroko Battey, Claudine Bartlett, Terry Hanney, Nina Rupp, Ethan Welch, Barbara Jablonski and our Host Stacey Kirby thoroughly enjoyed the morning.

Turning Point Park Paintout (November 4)
Three members (Nina Rupp, Terry Brooks and Rory Schalhorn) attended this Saturday paintout at Turning Point Park on the Genesee River in Rochester.

Halloween Paintout (October 31)
We were dressed in costume as our favorite artist...most of us were artists anyway. We had candy and spooky music to enjoy while painting at Mt. Hope Cemetery. We had a spooky, fun time -- the park was in full color. Present were Barbara Jablonski, Lauretta Kirk, Bobbi Prince, Brande Arno, Collette Savage, Rory Schalhorn, Stephanie Kelley, Terry Brooks Gail Kellogg, Nina Rupp, and Barbara Muratore.

Seneca Park Paintout (October 25)
The sun came out just as we began painting the Veteran's Memorial Bridge (Rt 104) from the walking bridge at Seneca Park. The gorge was in full color. We all captured the light beautifully. Terry Brooks, Kathy Bolin, Ken Lajewski, Barbara Jablonski, and Host Nina Rupp attended.

Esperanza Paintout (October 16 and 17)
On a glorious, sunny October morning we met at Bully Hill Winery on Keuka Lake for our first 2-day outing and overnight. The fall colors were nearly at peak and the scenery was spectacular! Some artists focused on the grape vines and buildings; others the wonderful vista of the Lake. What a fantastic day -- painting couldn't have been better. It was painters' heaven. In late afternoon we headed to Esperanza, a 1838 gracious Greek Revival Inn overlooking the Lake. We enjoyed a lovely evening socializing, dining and hospitality of the Inn. The next morning, however, was met with opposite weather conditions. While savoring a delightful breakfast, we were gathering our courage to tackle the gusty, gale-like winds and pouring rain outside. Saved by the Inn's festival tent and heaters, we perserved and completed our day's work successfully. We all passed our PAP Survival Course 101.
Attendees were Barbara Muratore, Hiroko Battey, Bobbi Gradle, Sally Moses, Brenda Lyness, Brande Arno, Barbara Jablonski, Kathy Bolin, Rona Poss, Inky Watts, Lauretta Kirk, Bobbi Prince, Peggy Piscitello, Babette Altman, Dorothy Weichenthan, Joan Shaw, Kath Schifano and our HOST Claudine Bartlett. Susie Covert and Cavalene Harder joined us on Monday.

Rochester Public Market Paintout (October 5)
What fun we had today at the Public Market. The subjects were overwhelming a bit and occasionally a truck would pull up in front of our subjects. We would wave a big paint brush full of red paint, however, and the vehicle would move quickly. Bill Sheridan, Barbara Muratore, Terry Brooks, Lauretta Kirk, Barbara Jablonski, Ethan Welch and our host Gordon VanVliet enjoyed the morning.

Mendon Ponds Paintout (September 27)
The following members attended the paintout at Mendon Ponds: Jane Lawson, Sally Moses, Mary Morgan, Colette Savage, Barbara Jablonski, Rona Poss, Kathy Bolin, Claudine Bartlett and Ethan Welch. It was a beautiful day; the group painted at the big pond, then had a lunchtime painting review/critique.
Cooper Horse Farm Paintout (September 23)
A cloudy, mild autumn morning greeted nine painters at the Cooper Horse Farm in Hilton, NY. A very pleasant spot that will be beautiful in a couple of weeks as the fall colors intensify - we're planning a couple of return visits.
Phyllis Bryce Ely, Nina Rupp, Melanie Stopani, Stu Chait, Lauretta Kirk, Christopher O'Handley, Terry Brooks, Colette Savage, and host Bobbi Prince attended.

Kirbys Farm Paintout (September 21)
Fifteen members gathered at Kirbys Farm/Market in Brockport on a cool, breezy morning. Members painted the farm and market buildings, fields, and orchards. Judy Soprano led a painting review/critique afterwards. We're still waiting for some photos...

IPAP Paintout/Port of Rochester (September 7)
A Claude Monet Day --- soft sky and colors. The Port of Rochester is an exciting and wonderful location to paint. Some of us painted our slow-to-be-leaving fast ferry; others the coast guard building and boats. We decided to have another paintout here soon. This time everyone will paint the Mayor Johnson's Ferry. Our paintings may become future collector's items!
Claudine Bartlett, Barbara Jablonski, Hiroko Battey, Jeanette Musliner, Nina Rupp, Jen Spaker, Nancy Steckel, Peggy Piscitello, Chris Kolupski, and Barbara Muratore attended.

Pultneyville Paintout/Annual Meeting (August 31)
Thirty nine members enjoyed our second annual paintout at Pultneyville Yacht Club. We had a morning paintout and afternoon paintout; each followed by a critique. We enjoyed a fantastic luncheon buffet followed by GVPAP's first Annual Members Meeting. At the end of the painting day, members voted for "Day of Day Award". Chip Stevens won this award with a beautiful watercolor of a harbor house.

Wyoming County/Hillside Inn Paintout (August 24)

Mike Graves, Colette Savage, Sally Moses, Jane Lawson, Dorothy Weichanthal, Gordon van Vliet, Stacey Kirby, Bob Keim, David Huebsch, Guy LeClair, Phillip Bliss, and Nancy Steckel.

Cornhill Landing Paintout (August 18)
Eighteen artists enjoyed a beautiful day at Cornhill Landing on the Genesee River. R-News Channel 9 saw us across the Genesee River from their offices and sent a tv person over. She filmed us for about 45 minutes and left just before Stewart Low, Art Critic for the D&C showed up with a photographer. Stewart is running a feature on the Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters. Even though we had the pressure of the "world is watching" on us, we had a great paintout. We even had a critique and Stewart Low watched us. We all stopped at the ice cream shop, including Stewart and enjoyed the air conditioning and an ice cream. It was a GREAT DAY!
Present were Teri Barlis, Mike Graves, Barbara Jablonski, Anne Jurgens, Terence Brooks, Brenda Lyness, Hiroko Battey, Claudine Bartlett, Jane Lawson, Brande Arno, Nina Rupp, Colette Savage, Nancy Steckel, Sally B. Moses, Jennifer Spaker, Gordon Van Vliet, Barbara Muratore, and Elaine Vigoda.

Linwood Paintout (August 16)
Full day paintout at beautiful Linwood Garden, located in York - about 45 minutes southwest of Rochester. The 6 GVPAP artists enjoyed a mild, mostly sunny day with low humidity - perfect for painting, as the colors in the landscape were very vivid. Haybales in the field were a popular subject.
Artists included Judy Soprano, Kathleen Hanney, Kathleen Hess, Christian Kolupski, Nina Rupp, and Christopher O'Handley.

Keuka Lake Paintout (August 10)
This full day paintout included "water scapes" from the shore as well as vistas of Keuka Lake up the hill. Warm and summery with gentle breezes -- just a perfect day. And Susie Covert was a perfect host...we had a great lunch, comradery and critique. We'll go again next year.
Kathleen Hess, Gordon Van Vliet, Kathryn Bevier, Kathleen Bolin, Susan Covert, Barbara Doyle, Roberta Gradl, Cavalene Harder, Barbara Jablonski, Gail Kellogg.

Eastman House Paintout (August 4)

Jeanette Musliner, Barbara Jablonski, Terence Brooks, Gail Kellogg, Kathleen Bolin, Brenda Lyness, Hiroko Battey, Claudine Bartlett, Barbara Muratore, Cavalene Harder, Brande Arno, Carolyn Parker, Richard Thomas, Nina Rupp, Melanie Stopani, Christian Kolupski, Lois Watts, Gordon Van Vliet and Teresa Barlis.

Edgemere Rd. Paintout (August 3)

Jane Lawson, Eleanor Milborrow, Kathleen Hess, Barbara Jablonski, Hiroko Battey, Christian Kolupski, Gordon Van Vliet, Terence Brooks, Sally B. Moses, and Christopher O'Handley attended.
